The Wedding Singer — Opens Tonight!

History of the 80’s:
Primer for those born after 1975

This is summer school, kiddies, so don’t worry about a dissertation on the economic and political climate of the 80’s. We’re talking pop culture, the better to enjoy The Wedding Singer at TriArts! We figured we’d save you a trip to Wikipedia. Which wasn’t even a word way back in 1985.

Flashdance: This box office hit about a welder in a steel mill by day and dancer in a Pittsburgh tavern by night launched a million leg warmers. Jennifer Beals starred in this New Wave retelling of the Cinderella story. And by New Wave, we do mean wave—as in its iconic water scene. The success of this film in part contributed to the success of the newly created Music Television, aka MTV. Back in the 80’s MTV became a national phenomenon, and was all about music videos. That was before it descended into random realty shows about people no one cares about. Word.

Boy George: gave androgyny an international stage with the success of his band, Culture Club.  They had a #1 hit titled “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” He later starred in the London musical Taboo, based on his life, which had great success in London's West End, though a heavily altered Rosie O'Donnell-produced run in New York was short-lived. Now that hurt.

Cell Phones: just invented, were as big as a microwave and you couldn’t text on them (OMG!)

DeLorean: a sports car that featured gull-wing doors and was symbolic of the excess of the decade. So of course that’s what Glenn, the Wall Street exec, drives. After all he is “All About the Green”. Oh, and a modified version of the car became iconic for its appearance as Marty McFly’s time machine in Back to the Future.

Simply Wed: the wedding singer’s band name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 80’s band, Simply Red, led by red-headed, blue-eyed soul singer, Mick Hucknall. (Sidebar: Exec. Director Alice Bemand’s husband Steve went to Manchester University with Mick, and was a driver for his college punk band named The Frantic Elevators.)

Cassette Players: were expensive, but sounded better than 8-tracks. Or Record Players.  Also known as Boomboxes, they are often associated with breakdancing. Yes, kiddies, we invented break-dancing long before “So You Think You Can Dance.” Cassette Players then morphed into the Walkman, which eventually gave birth to the Ipod.

Imelda Marcos: The former first lady of the Philippines, she is often remembered for symbols of the corrupt extravagance of her husband Ferdinand’s political reign, such as having over 3000 pairs of shoes. Imelda had the shoes and Ferdinand got the boot.

Yes, this may appear as a random selection of tidbits about the decade of decadence, but when you come see The Wedding Singer and it will all make sense. Would I lie to you?
