Why We All Have a Ball With Monty!
This Americanized version of The Full Monty was adapted from the hit 1997 British film of the same name, which was one of the blockbuster films of the year. But musical adaptations of films are notoriously tricky to translate to live theater, so why does this one work so brilliantly? You can thank the ingenius playwright and screenwriter Terrence McNally, for one. He cleverly keeps the focus on the father/son relationship in a straightforward, honest way that’s accessible to all audiences. In fact, at one performance of this bawdy, tender, salt-of-the-earth musical comedy, one of the most elegant, urbane women in modern society was seen leaping to her Pradas during the finale, wildly clapping with the rest of the delighted audience. She was Kitty Carlisle Hart, widow of the great lyricist Moss Hart, and at the time she was in her nineties. At The Full Monty, we all have a ball!
More Roars of Approval for The Full Monty
“Hats off to The Full Monty!” said The Boston Herald,
“It’s hilariously staged, with a terrific score and witty choreography.” Boston’s WBZ-TV agreed: “I loved The Full Monty and so will you! The show is loaded with great times, great tunes, and likeable, loopy characters.”
