'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' Opens This Friday!

"Can you spell i-r-r-e-s-i-s-t-i-b-l-e? 'Spelling Bee' is riotously funny and remarkably ingenious. Gold stars all around.”
The New York Times.

The Washington Post called it the “Funniest Thing on Seven Consonants” and now you can head-on over to TriArts Sharon Playhouse for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” -- a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

The show's Tony Award-winning creative team, including composer / lyricist William Finn (Falsettos and Falsettoland) has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of misfit achievers looking to please their parents, and more problematically themselves. For them a spelling bee is the one place where this endearing team of underdogs can stand out and fit in all at the same time.

Audience participation is a must for this show and audience members are chosen before the performance to participate on-stage as spellers. You’ll want to make sure you know how to spell H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S — because that is what this fun-filled evening is all about.

“Spelling Bee” is uniquely connected to regional theatre here in the Tri-State area, for it was at The Barrington Stage, in Sheffield, MA, that their first production workshop was held in the winter of 2004, and the following summer the show had its first full  performance in a cafeteria turned theatre here. From there it went on to “Off-Broadway’s” Second Stage Theatre, where it quickly sold-out and was extended due to glowing reviews, and finally settled in to Broadway’s “Circle in the Square” in 2005. Nominated for 6 Tony’s, “Spelling Bee” took home two, for Best Book and Best Actor, and was also nominated for 6 Drama Desk awards and won for Outstanding Book and Outstanding Director, as well as being nominated for 4 Lucille Lortel awards and won  for Outstanding Musical and Actor.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opens this Friday, July16th, runs through July 25th and is sponsored by Salisbury Bank & Trust, Prindle Insurance and WKZE 98.1FM.

Save-the-date for; Oklahoma, August 5 – 22; The Playhouse Stomp, August 17; A Boy With Dreams, July 31; and Divas Do More Broadway, August 27 -29.

Your teen won’t want to miss Broadway Revue Song & Dance Workshop for Teens (13-17)!

This exciting week-long program is led by Heather Holohan, who recently received rave reviews for her performance as Linda in TriArts’ production of The Wedding Singer. Artistic Director Michael Berkeley will accompany her on the piano.

Heather will work on a solo song and dance performance specially selected for each teen, in addition to ensemble numbers, culminating in a Broadway Revue on Friday July 23rd.

This is a very special opportunity to work on voice, dance and acting skills with other teens.

Last summer many students expressed an interest is having an older age group to work with and here’s your chance!

The class will come to see The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Sharon Playhouse on Wednesday, July 21st at 2pm, and meet the actors after the performance.
