Tired of the lingering recession? Put off by the political malaise? Then get your buggy on up to Sharon, CT and let the Tri-Arts production of Oklahoma! give your spirits a much-needed lift.
Set in turn-of-the-century Oklahoma, this first of many Rodgers & Hammerstein productions debuted on Broadway in March 1943 during the depths of World War II. It centers on a pair of earnest but awkward young lovers, living in a much simpler time, who are balancing their fear of rejection with the even worse calamity of missing out on marrying their true love.
The heart-lifting production ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances on Broadway, enjoyed national tours and revivals, and endures today as a favorite of school and community theatre.
Oklahoma! is first and foremost a thoroughly entertaining musical featuring enviable roles that can showcase the song and dance talents of its cast. The TriArts production, under the guidance of director Mark Robinson and musical director Michael Berkeley, is clearly on the mark here and seamlessly blends a mix of fine performances by talented actors who could carry lesser productions all on their own.
The standout performer is Caitlin Caughell who plays Laurie Williams, a virtuous young woman who loves Curly McLain. Laurie is restrained by society’s norms, and a bit of her immaturity, from displaying her true emotions, and must wait for Curly to make the first move. Ms. Caughell makes it all real due to her enviable knack of portraying the innocence of a girl-next-door along with a spellbinding voice that is reminiscent of Julie Andrews.
Ryan Speakman brings the character of Curly McLain to life via a mix of the gosh-darn awkwardness of youth and a ‘when the going gets tough, you can count on me’ strength of an old west cowboy. He ultimately wagers all that he possesses in the world to win Laurie – and fights to the death to keep her.
Shane Quinn, as Ali Hakim, the Persian traveling peddler, is superb as a traveling salesman in quest of the favors of the farmer’s daughter – while just a step or two ahead of the father’s shogun. His performance is all energy and expression as he manipulates his way to his goals.
Standing in stark contrast to the wholesome goodness of Laurie and Curly is Jud Fry (magnificently portrayed by Dane Agostinis), a hired hand/voyeur with a mean streak, a temper and a hankering for Laurie. Uncouth and creepy, he is both riveting and revolting. The thought that the evil Jud might get anywhere near Laurie is just repelling. He also possesses a powerful singing voice that simply commands attention.
Aubrey Flick brings a Carol Burnett-like intensity to the flighty character of Ado Annie, who might be described as a party girl in more contemporary times. She just loves men and just about any one will do, thank you very much.
The signature dance sequence, a dream ballet at the conclusion of the first act, is spellbinding.
With timeless songs like ‘Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,’ ‘The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,’ ‘The Farmer and the Cowman, ‘Oklahoma,’ and several ensemble dance numbers, the overall effect is upbeat and thoroughly entertaining.
While perhaps just a nuance at other regional theatres, the costumes, lighting, set design and even the choreographed fight scene at Tri-Arts are superb and add to the professionalism of the production.
