| Musings from Michael Berkeley, on Auditions
A local actress recently came to me asking whether or not I place her in the category of talented professionals or local commmunity talent. I thought very carefully about how I would answer this interesting question and I told her that I do not categorize people. There are Broadway performers that I don't think are very good and there are local community people that I think are exceptionally talented. What I do is look at each auditionee as a potential advantage to the show I am constructing and view them all as extraordinary. Some people have lengthy resumes and professional training, some have only one show that they did 40 yrs ago and are still living on their laurels, some people are talented singer/actors who chose --often wisely--not to go into theatre as a profession, but still have the skills to compete with the best, some are brand new but just happen to have the right qualities to help tell the story of the show we are casting, some are students of the theatre anxious for the chance to get on stage, some are terrified to even audition but with the right care and direction their qualities can be brought out and they can shine next to a seasoned Broadway professional. There are no categories. There are only people who want to be part of a show. What excites me the most is combining all these personalities and varied talents and abilities into a company that together find a world --the world of the show--with which they can all connect and create a community of characters that brings them pride and joy. That, for me, is why I am the Artistic Director of TriArts with its mission of bringing people--all kinds of people-- together--- to accomplish extraordinary things.
