NYU Credit Available at TriArts Sharon Playhouse – Auditions in NYC, CT, and OH!

Overview…

TriArts Sharon Playhouse has a partnership with NYU Steinhardt that allows current college students from Universities across the country to earn academic credit for their performance in a production on the TriArts stage!

Description…

TriArts has designated a limited number of "college positions" for their summer season. At auditions (or during the headshot/resume submissions), any current college student can indicate their interest in being considered for this program.

How it works…

Actors may submit/audition any of the following ways for the college positions…

  • If in CT areaAttend local auditions. Auditions are held in early February by appointment only at TriArts Bok Gallery, Sharon, CT. Email audrey@triarts.net or call 860-364-7469 ext. 100 to schedule your audition in CT.
  • If in NYC areaAttend New York City open calls. Open calls are held in February.
  • If in the Midwest areaAttend a regional audition (hosted by Ohio Northern University, Ada OH) during the regional audition period.
  • Submit materialsSubmit your headshot and resume to casting.triarts@gmail.com. Indicate that you are interested in a college position for the summer season and you will be given an appointment in NYC. Appointments are scheduled in mid-February.

If cast and offered a college position…

You will need to register for the course (Music Theatre Workshop – Performance Practicum) being offered through NYU Steinhardt. You are also responsible for payment of two credits through the appropriate NYU registration staff. More specific information will be provided when the offer is made.

How to get Credit at your University…

NYU: Sign up for two credits of Music Theatre Workshop – Performance Practicum. Contact John Simpkins for further information.

Other Universities: You will need to check with your advisor or appropriate curriculum staff or faculty member at your institution to determine whether the course credits will transfer to your institution and where they might be applied in your course of study.

Stipend/ Housing/ Costs…

TriArts will provide the student a weekly stipend ($100/week) to offset cost of living while at the theatre (no additional salary is paid). TriArts will also provide housing and local transportation while at the theatre…and one round-trip Metro North train ticket reimbursement from NYC (if needed). The student is responsible for the cost of the two-credit course at NYU. NYU summer class fees change yearly and can be found through the NYU website or Registrar's office.

Frequently Asked Questions…

What if I would accept a college position but would rather be considered for a paid position first?
If you would like to be considered for a paid position (non-college position), you must attend one of the NYC audition calls (you will not be considered for a paid position if you audition in CT or OH). When you submit your headshot/resume to casting.triarts@gmail.com or attend the open call, please clearly indicate that you would first like to be considered for a paid position but are willing to accept one of the college positions if a paid position is not available to you. (There are a limited number of paid positions available for the season)
Is there an academic component to the summer other than the rehearsals/performances for the production?
There is a small academic component to the college positions (additional to the rehearsals and performances for the production). It includes keeping a journal of your experiences, attending brief meetings to put your experience in academic context, and a short writing assignment at the end of your experience. More specific information is available when offered a role.
Are the college positions for specific roles in the shows or ensembles?
A college position can be offered for any slot in any show – from the largest principal role to an ensemble position. There are a limited number of college positions guaranteed on the season – but they are not specified for any certain shows or roles. Casting is all based on the audition.
What is the name of the NYU course?
Music Theatre Workshop – Performance Practicum. 2 credits. NYU Professor John Simpkins is the instructor of record and will oversee the academic component of your experience.
Is it possible to do multiple shows for the 2 credit course?
Generally, the 2 credits is for one production (rehearsal and performance period that totals 5-6 weeks). It is possible, in selected situations, to be cast in two productions in the same season. If that is the case, you would be allowed to participate in both productions for the one 2-credit experience. You may also choose, in that case, to sign up for additional credits (up to 4) because of the two productions.
